At the beginning of the 20th century, the world's attention turned to the polar regions as explorers raced to be first to reach the North Pole and then the South Pole.

Going into the 21st century, the Arctic and Antarctic, along with glaciers in other parts of the world, are the focus of scientific attention because ice holds answers to questions about the Earth’s past, present and future climates.
